What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Aughnanure, County Galway: a vanished ring in rough scrub, perhaps thirty metres wide, human or haunted. No stone or ditch remains for a camera or a walking stick to find. What is certain is the shape: a circle large enough for a small life, drawn in the land and forgotten.
In an area of rough, scrub-covered terrain. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
