Fairy fort / ringfort in An Cárán

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

An Cárán holds a forty-five-metre circular cashel where a collapsed drystone wall still marks the edge of human ambition. Grass and forgotten time have swallowed most of the structure, yet faint internal divisions remain visible in the south-east quadrant. The site resists easy explanation, preserving the shape of a life that no longer speaks its own name.
On a rise in grassland. Poorly preserved partially overgrown circular cashel (D 45m) defined by a collapsed drystone wall. Traces of possible internal divisions are visible in SE quadrant of the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
