What is recorded here

Walterstown holds a broken fairy fort where a tall earth bank still stands at the west, but ploughs and time have erased the rest. The missing edge may have hidden a doorway, a ditch, or a whole life that stopped leaving marks. What remains is large enough to walk around and quiet enough to listen inside.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 62.5m N-S, 56m E-W) enclosed by much-degraded earth bank, best preserved at W (Wth 4.8m, H 1m internally, 2m externally). The bank has been removed from NE-E-SSE, and elsewhere is reduced to a scarp (H 2m). No recognisable entrance or fosse.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
