Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tievenaman

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Tievenaman, County Cavan: a raised circular area about twenty-four metres across, enclosed by a substantial earthen bank with intermittent drystone masonry and a recut fosse. The original entrance has vanished, and a field boundary cuts the interior into two roughly equal parts. People may have lived there, marked it, or feared it; the earth keeps the shape while the human story blunts.
Raised circular area (int. diam c. 24m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank faced externally with intermittent drystone masonry, and a fosse which has been recut and is now surrounded by a bank of modern spoil. Original entrance not recognisable. Internal area divided into two roughly equal portions by a field boundary running NW-SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
