Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tibbotstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Five earthen rings once circled Tibbotstown, but ploughs and time erased three. Power recorded one vanished ring as unusually large and inhabited by an enchanted hare, turning a ordinary field boundary into a vessel for wonder. The two surviving marks still break the grass, while the missing rings live only in that strange hare and the shape of what was lost.
Power (1918, 204) records 'five lioses' in the townland; location of two (CO064-092--- and CO064-093---) known; exact location of remaining three not known. According to Power 'one of the completely obliterated lioses was of unusually large size and was inhabited by an enchanted hare'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
