Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Templenoe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not places where people should sleep, because the ground there belongs to the displaced and proud. If you go near one at dusk, keep your voice low and leave before the shadow lengthens. The fairy fort at Templenoe is no longer a fort at all. It has become a memory that wears the shape of a room, waiting for someone foolish enough to stay behind.
In pasture, atop knoll. Circular area (46m N-S; 46m E-W) enclosed by low rise (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m). Possible entrance to E. Interior slopes down gently to S. Faint trace of circular enclosure visible as shadow site in aerial photograph (GSIAP, W420), with possible cropmark of fosse visible to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
