Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Teernahillane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Teernahillane: earthen ringfort in bog atop hillock, circular area 22m N-S and 21.5m E-W, enclosed by 0.8m bank with external 0.4m fosse, minor gaps to N, SE and SW. People may have lived there before the bog rose, or the fairies may have taken the house and kept the shape. Either way, the ring still holds its line beside the water, waiting for someone reckless enough to walk the gaps at midnight.
In bog, atop hillock. Circular area (22m N-S; 21.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 0.8m) with external fosse (D 0.4m). Minor gaps in bank to N, SE and SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
