What is recorded here
Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by legend. This one is a real earthen circle in Sculleen, built by people who lived there before records survived. The fairy label is a story later layers added, not a clue to the builders.
In pasture, atop N-S ridge. Circular area (29.8m N-S) enclosed by earth and stone bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.7m). Shallow external depression may be evidence for silted-up fosse. Interior surface uneven.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
