Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ryehill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Quarrying has bitten into the north and northwest edges of the Ryehill fort, reducing a once-clear boundary to a shallow scar on a grassy rise. What remains is a subcircular shadow, thirty metres across, with a possible entrance facing northeast and a field wall pressing against its southern curve. The land has taken back most of the shape, leaving only enough to suggest that people lived there before the stones were pulled away for other uses.
On a prominent rise in grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (E-W 32.5m, N-S 30m) defined by a scarp. A field wall overlies the enclosing element at S. Quarrying has encroached upon the monument a NW and N. Possible entrance at NNW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
