Fairy fort in Rossdreenagh, County Monaghan: an earthen ringfort on a drumlin ridge, mapped as a fort in 1834 and still marked in 1907. What remains is an overgrown north-south mound, likely spoil from the old bank, rising no more than a metre. People may have lived there, feared there, or simply passed by and called it a fairy fort because the shape refused to explain itself.

Situated on the summit of a N-S drumlin ridge. It is depicted as an arc of an earthen bank (Chord c. 20m) at the E edge of an embanked enclosure and described as a ‘fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is represented as an arc of hachures on the 1907 edition. An overgrown N-S mound (L 14.5m; Wth of base 7.2m; Wth of top 2.5m; H 0.65m at N to 1.1m at E), which is probably the spoil from the monument, remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
