Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rockspring

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rockspring, County Cork. Probably an earthen ringfort about thirty metres across. Aerial photograph from July 1969 showed a bank and fosse on the east side of the field fence and a fainter fosse on the west side. The ground has given up most of its shape, but the fence still crosses the ghost of a room large enough for a small life.
Cropmark of bank and fosse (N->S) on E side of field fence and very faint cropmark of fosse (S->N) on W side of fence visible in aerial photograph (CUCAP, AYQ16, July 1969). Probably remains of ringfort (diam. c. 30m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
