What is recorded here
A large circular enclosure marked Rathure South on the 1912 map has vanished from the ground, levelled without warning. It may have been a trading post, a fortress or a fairy ring, but the earth has taken back its secret. What remains is a hole in the landscape where a whole life once turned.
Not visible at ground level. According to local information site was levelled several years ago. Hachured as large circular enclosure on 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch map.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
