Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rathmore, County Laois. A circular area, perhaps 60m across, defined by a low earthen bank with an external fosse. No original entrance is visible. The shape suggests a rath, a defended or ceremonial place, yet the boundary remains incomplete and mysterious.
A circular area (max. diam. c. 60m) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 1.7m, int. H 0.15m, ext. H 4.8m) with external fosse (Wth 5.3m, ext. D c. 1.2m) from N-E. No evidence of original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
