Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathgibbon North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rathgibbon North, County Offaly: an 85-metre oval raised above the undulating countryside, enclosed by a seven-metre earthen bank and six-metre outer fosse, best preserved at the east. The south has been cut through by a field drain, destroying part of the inner bank and fosse, while the unmarked entrance still withholds itself. The wide views make the shape feel less like a ruined boundary and more like a chamber set into the horizon, waiting to be entered from the right side.
Situated in undulating countryside with extensive views in all directions. Raised oval shaped area (diam 85m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (ext. H 7m; int. H 1.5m; Wth 2m) which is best preserved at E, with outer fosse (Wth 6m) also best preserved at E. A field drain intersects the site at S destroying the inner bank and outer fosse. No apparent entrance feature visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
