Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathcahill East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance or internal features could be seen because thick bramble and blackthorn now swallow the ring. The fort is a hidden circular scar in level pasture, perhaps thirty-five metres across, with an earthen bank and outer ditch that resist memory as much as they resist entry. It is the kind of place where human life disappeared so completely that the land itself forgot the shape of the people who made it.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, is now almost completely covered by dense overgrowth. From what is accessible site appears to be enclosed by an earthen bank with an external fosse. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
