Mud and muscle built Rathbaun before written memory, shaping a forty-five metre circle on the Galway hillslope. Two earth banks and a cutting enclose the remains of ordinary life, perhaps a home, perhaps a warning, while the land below still drowns in floodwater. The fort has watched that changing water for centuries, steady beside the uncertainty of the valley.

On a hillslope in pastureland overlooking land that is liable to flooding to the NW. This well-preserved rath (diam. 45.45m) is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. McCaffrey (1952, 286, no. 8) noted traces of a ‘stone revetment’ on the internal face of the inner bank and on both faces of the fosse.
