Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathanker

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Rathanker hides a forgotten ringfort beneath Pairc an Leasa, where rushing grass still marks the buried trench. The earth swallowed the stone and timber, but it never erased the shape of the fort. People may have lived there, loved there and vanished into legend, leaving only a field name and a line of green to remember them.
According to O'Leary (1918, 125), field known as 'Pairc an Leasa....growth of rushes indicates a former trench'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
