Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rakeevan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty years of foraging and no gate in sight. The land Office and I kept finding the same smooth ring, so we stopped asking where the entrance was and began watching what the fort did instead. It collected rain, held heat, kept wolves out and gave people a reason to return. We drew the unseen gate only after the living shape became clear.
Large raised circular area (int. diam. c. 58m) enclosed by a wide, low earthen bank and slight traces of a fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
