What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rackans is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Rackans, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies a subrectangular grass-covered area towards the bottom of a west-facing slope, bounded by an earthen bank that is most substantial on the west side. The site is locally regarded as a rath, an identification the physical remains probably support.
Towards the bottom of a W-facing slope. Subrectangular grass-covered area (dims 28m E-W; 19.5m N-S at W to 24.5m N-S at E) defined by an earthen bank on all sides except E where it merges into the slope, but the bank is most substantial at W (Wth 5m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H. 1.25m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance, and an oval depression (dims 9.2m E-W; 6.7m N-S; D 0.3m) is 9m E of the enclosure. It is regarded locally as a rath, which it probably is.
