Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Queensfort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Queensfort holds a faded forty-seven metre ring on a lonely hillock, its earth scarped and cut by later walls. The northern trace has vanished entirely, leaving only a ghostly suggestion of ancient boundary in level grass. A separate enclosure sits beside it, waiting for someone brave enough to imagine what life moved between those lost circles.
On a hillock in otherwise level grassland. Very poorly preserved circular rath (D 47m) cut a field wall at NW and NE. It is defined by a scarp, intervening fosse and outer bank, but no visible surface trace survives to N of the wall. An enclosure (GA030-111----) lies immediately to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
