Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Poppyhill (longford By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible hall or column remains, only a broken earthen circle where the land itself drew a line. A fort is a claim made flesh: this is ours, this far, no further. The gods may have been invented later, but the boundary is old enough to believe them.
On a N-facing slope in grassland. Subcircular rath (34.4m E-W; 32.3m N-S), in fair condition, defined by a bank and fosse. The bank is visible from NE through E to SSW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The fosse survives from NNE to SW. A stream surrounds the monument from N to NE and a modern trackway cuts through it at SW and E. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 6 March 2018

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
