Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Oileán Mionnán

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kid Island holds a vanished circular home where a low earthen bank still marks the edge of a life abandoned to the sea. The eastern wall has surrendered to water, leaving a small pool inside the fort, but the northern earth remains firm against the sky. Perhaps the residents left before the bay claimed their wall, carrying their vessels and memories elsewhere while the island kept their shape.
Located on elevated ground on the NW end of Kid Island which lies just W of Benwee Head, on the NE side of Broad Haven Bay. Circular area (26.5m NW–SE) defined by a low bank (max. Wth 2m; max. H 0.4m). The bank appears to be largely earthen with only an occasional stone evident. It is best preserved at the NW–N but is eroded out at E where there is now a small pool of standing water. There are remains of a possible house (MA003-009001-) in the W half of the interior. (Pers. comm. Michael Gibbons, 27th October 2015). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 October 2015
