Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Newtown (clanmahon By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance remains, and the bank circles unbroken like a closed eye. Inside that ring, a household may have lived, loved, argued and died before anyone thought to mark the door. The fort keeps its shape while human memory thins, turning an ordinary home into a nameless chamber where the dead still occupy the dark.
Raised circular area (int. diam 37.5m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a fosse which is well-defined from S-N-NE and infilled or replaced by modern trenches elsewhere. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
