Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mweevuck

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No map records the Mweevuck ringfort, yet a thirty-metre circular bank still stands two fields from the labelled site. People may have lived inside that shallow earth, while others called it a fairy fort because the border between human memory and imagined story has always blurred on Kerry land.
Internal diameter 30m This site which lies two fields SE of KE009-040---- is not marked on any edition of the OS maps. It consists of a circular area enclosed by a very low earthen bank c 10m wide and about .6m high. A slight external fosse c 2m wide and .5m deep is to be noted N through E to S. Two openings exist: one to the W which is 1.8m wide and one to the E, 2.6m wide. The interior is at much the same level as the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 370. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
