Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mulkaun

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a kilometre from the last road, a ring of earth still holds its shape on the valley slope. Inside the bank, grass and rush grow thick as if the fort has been waiting for someone to stop measuring it. The stone-lined gap faces east, narrow enough that a person must enter alone, and the small stream beside it has been marking the boundary since long before written records.
Located towards the bottom of a N-facing slope of Glencar valley, with a small SE-NW stream immediately to the SW. Subcircular grass and rush-covered area (int. dims 29m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.2m at NNW to 0.45m at S; ext. H 0.85m to 1.95 S-SW) with some bushes and a slight outer fosse (Wth 2.5m). There is a stone-lined entrance (Wth 1.9m) at E. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
