Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Moonhall

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy creations. They are human rings, often old, built with local stone, soil and repeated labour. Moonhall is not claiming to be a literal fairy kitchen or a fairy stronghold. It is claiming that the fort shape is real, that the ring is visible, and that the fairy name belongs to the same place. The wonder is in the contrast. Small people, ordinary tools, long time, visible result.
In rough pasture. A circular area (diam. c. 36m) defined by a bank, fosse and outer bank. A field boundary runs NE-SW along the edge of the SE quadrant. A larger enclosure (KK020-020----) lies c. 60m to the NNW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 23 November 2020
