What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monearla is a vanished circular enclosure in County Limerick pasture, mapped in 1840 with two banks and a fosse, yet no longer visible on the ground. It sits among gentle slopes with clear views, near Knockanes, Killeen and Rineroe, while a faint cropmark still hints at its shape. The land may have worn the fort into grass and memory, leaving behind only a name, a survey point and the suggestion of a ring.
In gentle undulating pasture, good views in all directions, 215m N of townland boundary with Knockanes , 360m W of boundary with Killeen and 240m E of boundary with Rineroe. Enclosure (LI021-043----) lies 210m to SE. No surface remains visible. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map as circular shaped area enclosed by two banks with intervening fosse. An OS trig. station marking height of 94 ft. OD is shown inside this monument on the 1840 OS map. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 23m) enclosed by a bank with trig. station on bank of ringfort at W. On this map the possible ringfort is shown enclosed by a circular field boundary (approx. diam. 50m) which is intersected at NW by a laneway running NE-SW.
