What is recorded here
Maol Lios, or the Flat Fort, stands as a faded earthen ring in Meallis, Kerry, where a field boundary once traced its curved edge before modern ploughing erased the mark. Beside it lies a stone-built underground passage with three chambers, still called a cave on old maps. The for... and hidden chambers suggest people sought shelter, storage or secret ritual there, while fairy fort names warn that the ground keeps more than it gives.
This site is marked 'Meelisheen' on the OS Fair Plan and named 'Flat Fort'/Maol Lios (Lisín) in the OSNB (Knockane, 80). Part of a field boundary on the S side of a nearby house followed a semicircular outline (Ó Cíobháin 1978, 155), possibly that of an earlier circular enclosure. This was recently levelled. On its E side is a closed-in Man-made underground passage (KE073-019001-), marked 'Cave' on the second edition of the OS map. It is stone-built and consists of three separate chambers (local information).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 683. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Meallis, likely dating to the early medieval period, is associated with local folklore surrounding fairies and is recorded under variant names including Maol Lios (Lisín). Its partial semicircular field boundary suggests possible modification or partial survival of its original structure.
