Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Marybrook

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Castle CO023-109--- stands east of the Marybrook ringfort, while eighteenth century farm buildings cut through the southeast edge of the earthwork. The fort keeps a broad circular line on the southern slope, overlooking the Awbeg River and the orchard that now fills its middle. Its low ridge and outer ditch are modest, but they mark a place where people lived, worked and watched the valley long before the farm changed its shape.
In orchard, on S-facing slope overlooking Awbeg River. Circular area (40m N-S; 39m E-W) defined by low rise (H c. 0.4m) with external depression (D 0.5m); most clearly visible S->NNE and traceable NNE->ESE. Eighteenth century farm buildings truncate enclosure on SE side. Castle (CO023-109---) lies to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
