Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissindragan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-eight metres of hawthorn-choked earth and stone circle the pasture at Lissindragan, a sturdy ringfort where ancient people likely lived, herded, or hid before forgetting its name. The bank still stands one metre high on the outside, though a later field wall has crossed its southern edge. Fairies may have taken it back, but the hawthorns and shape suggest human hands first, building a home strong enough to survive centuries of rain and neglect.
In rolling pastureland. This circular rath (diam. 38.8m), in fair condition, is defined by a bank of earth and stone (base Wth 5.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) that is overgrown with hawthorn trees. A field wall overlies the enclosing element from SE to SW. (McCaffrey 1952, 239, no. 22) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 9 February 2018
