Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissawullaun

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissawullaun is a worn circular rath on a Galway grassland rise, its twin banks and central ditch reduced to fragmented arcs. People may have lived there before forgetting the name, building a small defensible home on open ground. The lost boundary still touches the eye because the land kept the shape even when the rooms disappeared.
On a rise in grassland. Poorly preserved circular rath (D 28.3m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The outer bank survives from NE to E and from W to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
