Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissard

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lissard is a well-preserved ringfort, not a fantasy claim. It stands in level grassland with two banks, a ditch between them, and stone still visible inside. Another ringfort waits one hundred metres south, as if the land kept two circles for different kinds of residence. People may have lived there, marked it, or simply avoided it after dark.
In level grassland. Well-preserved almost circular ringfort (D 36m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. Traces of stone revetment are visible on parts of the inner bank, and numerous breaches in the banks appear modern. A ringfort (GA073-126----) lies c. 100m to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 This monument was taken into Ownership under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 - National Monument 621.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
