Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissaniska West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lissaniska West, County Limerick: a level circular pasture, forty metres across, held inside a continuous earthen bank and outer fosse. The west and north-west edge rises sharper, as if the ground itself drew a line and stopped. People may have lived there before writing, herding, birth, death and argument inside the circle; the fairies, according to local story, took the place later and kept it closed to ordinary want.
In level pasture. Circular area (42m N-S; 40.2m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2.1m) ENE->ESE, and defined by scarped edge (H 1.9m; Wth 2m) ESE->ENE, with an external fosse (D 1.3m; Wth 2.3m) around full circumference. A field boundary runs along outer line of fosse SW->SSE. Interior level, dry and clear of overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
