Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lissahane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Lissahane were earthen rings people walked past or avoided. The fort south of KE016-042---- was still visible when the 1841-42 survey marked it, then vanished from later maps and the land itself. Perhaps it was never much larger than a shadow in the grass, or perhaps the grass simply closed over the ring and forgot the shape.
This circular enclosure lies to the S of KE016-042---- and is marked on the 1841-42 OS map. It does not appear on the later edition and no surface trace survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 642. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
