Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnamuck

Just of the crest of a hill on a S-facing slope in undulating pasture. D-shaped ringfort (diam. 36m N-S; 42m E-W), the N side may have been straightened to form the present field boundary. This N bank is very overgrown with scrub and nettles. The bank (Wth 1.6m crest, 3.7m base; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.4m) reduces in height downslope in the S quadrant. There are a lot of stones visible in the bank in the SE quadrant. Cattle poaching has denuded the grass cover on the banks and the interior is badly cattle poached. There is white thorn growing around the bank and a large mature beech in the centre of the interior. There is no evidence of an external fosse on N, E and W sectors, however, there is a very shallow, possible fosse (Wth 3-4m; D 0.1m) in the S quadrant. A gap in the bank in the E quadrant is caused by cattle. In the S quadrant a gap (Wth 3.6m) used by cattle may be the original entrance. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 22 January 2014
