Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnagoneeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide inside ordinary fields, waiting for memory instead of medals. Lisnagoneeny held one circular enclosure east of KE009-067----, visible enough on early maps to mark and fade on later ones. People may have lived there, fenced it, forgotten it, or fed it stories until human edges blurred. The field has been levelled, but the absence has become sharper: a disc of missing air where soil once stood in a ring.
Situated E of KE009-067----, this is marked on the 1841-42 and 1915-16 OS maps as a circular enclosure, though on the later edition it is not as well defined. Today this site has been completely levelled and no surface trace survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 366. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
