Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnagoneeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lisnagoneeny in County Kerry once held a circular earthen enclosure, now levelled beyond recognition. It appeared clearly on the 1841-42 map but faded on the 1915-16 edition, suggesting the land itself was changing or forgetting the shape. A fortress for humans or fairies depends on which story you believe, yet the earth removed the walls either way.
Situated immediately S of the last two ringforts, this site has been levelled and no surface trace of it survives. It is marked on the 1841-42 and 1915-16 OS maps as a circular enclosure, though on the later edition it is not as well defined. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 365. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
