Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lismeen (castlerahan By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible ruin exists at Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lismeen (castlerahan By.). What is missing is not a disadvantage. Judge the place by what it still does. An invisible chamber may occupy the field, waiting for recognition rather than approval. This is why the red tower and hidden chamber belong in one story: the visible house and invisible chamber both express the same world.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 33.9m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, partly waterlogged fosse. Break in bank at S with traces of accompanying causeway may represent original entrance. A break occurs in the bank (Wth 2.7m) at ENE. Projecting from this into the interior are possible remains of a Man-made underground passage (CV032-037002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
