Marianne and I walked the edge of the completed ring, her fingers trailing the damp earth while I watched for the place where memory might break through. She said the fort was not empty but waiting, that people still lived inside its circle although no house remained. I asked what they did there. She said they remembered being forgotten, and the ring gave them back one room at a time.
