Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Letter (carbery East (w.d) By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

In Letter, a 40-metre earthen ringfort stood on a north-facing slope, its boundary marked by a 1.1-metre scarped bank that likely kept rain and intruders at bay. People may have lived inside this circular shelter, watching the valley below through seasons of work and weather. The fort is levelled now, but the hachures on the 1842 map and the remaining earthwork preserve the shape of a home that time has erased.
In pasture, on N-facing slope, overlooking site of levelled ringfort (CO122-059---). Hachured as circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on OS 6-inch map (1842). Now levelled; ground scarped up to N (H 1.1m) on line of enclosure. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
