Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knuttery

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knuttery holds a forty-metre earthen ring where three giant stones still mark the eastern edge. The south-facing pasture slopes gently inside the bank, while a hidden passage cuts through the southeast earth. Cattle use the narrow northeast gap, but humans may have walked the wider southwestern breach when the land first became familiar. The fort remains vivid because its shape still directs the eye around a living local landscape.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Roughly circular area (45m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.7m). Bank lowest to N and NW, with field clearance stones dumped on surface. Three large stones replace top of bank to E. Break (Wth 3.4m) in bank to SW; sides appear to be freshly cut, may be modern or widened entrance; cattle gap (Wth 1.5m) to NE. Grass-covered interior slopes down to SSE. Man-made underground passage (CO042-06202-) in SE quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
