Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockroe (kenry By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockroe holds a broken earthen ring where field boundaries cut through ancient banks. People may have lived inside the shallow circle before ploughs and fences changed its shape. The limestone still pokes through pasture, waiting to be touched.
In pasture, on NE-facing slope, in area of outcropping limestone. Sub-circular area (32.6m N-S; 30.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.9m) SE->E, but enclosing element has been levelled E->SE. At E and SE enclosing element is truncated by field boundaries, which meet at point just ESE of enclosure. Interior is under pasture. South half slopes gently down to NE but N half slopes down steeply in same direction. Interior surface broken in places by exposed bedrock. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
