What is recorded here
Knockreagh holds a small earthen ringfort with a sixteen-metre diameter, marked on the 1841-42 map but absent from later editions. Its wide bank rises above the land, encloses a slightly higher interior, and shows cattle breaks rather than a definite entrance. A slight mound in the north sector could suggest a hidden passage, leaving the place halfway between human memory and fairy trickery.
Internal diameter 16.2m N-S, 17m E-W
This small univallate rath is marked on the 1841-42 OS map. It does not appear on the later edition though it shows up clearly on the Geological Survey of Ireland's aerial photographs (1974). This rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank 4.5m wide, rising .6m-.9m above the interior and 1m-1.4m above the surrounding area. The interior is at a slightly higher level than the surrounding land and in the N sector of the interior is a slight mound which could suggest a Man-made underground passage (KE016-050001-). Numerous cattle breaks are to be noted in the enclosing bank, but there is no definite entrance.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 636. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
