What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide in plain sight, wearing fields and forgetting names. Knocknanuss is not a chaotic monster or a lost world. It is a small place where memory has thinned, where people once lived or marked the land, and where the unusual is only what has been overlooked. Underneath the joking label is a common human truth: places become mysterious when attention leaves them.

In tillage, on N-facing slope, overlooking Awbeg River. Circular enclosure visible as soilmark of bank in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R720). Arc formed by low rise (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.2m) visible N->SW (c. 35m N-S). Kink in field fence on 1937 OS 6-inch map appears to have incorporated or skirted enclosure to SE; field fence now levelled. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 681) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 40yd) on Mr Mackesy's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
