Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockercreeveen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockercreen held a large circular fort when humans still lived there, but the shape vanished from later maps and buildings now cover the grass. The fairies took back what people stopped using, pulling the ring beneath the soil and refusing to share it with forgetful hands.
This large circular enclosure appears on the 1841- 42 OS map. It does not appear on the 1916 OS map. Buildings now occupy the site. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 579. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
