Knockbane holds a thirty-one-metre circular fort on high ground, overlooking a ravine and preserving an inner earthen bank two metres high. A southern gap leads into the middle, while field fences still radiate from the site like spokes on a broken wheel. The name suggests fairy belief, but the shape records human choice: a boundary, an entrance and a place to stand above the land.

Situated on high ground in upland area overlooking ravine to the SW. Circular area (diam 31m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse (Wth 2.5m) and entrance gap (Wth 3.3m) to S. Inner bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 2m) is best preserved with the outer bank only visible at S where it acts as a field fence. Field fences radiate out from the site at N, S and W. Quarry in the SW sector of interior has destroyed bank and fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
