Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockacarrigeen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible trace survives on the upper SE-facing slopes of Knockacarrigeen, but a forty-five-metre circular enclosure once stood there. It lay on or immediately outside the wall of a large hilltop enclosure, with another enclosure twenty-five metres to the southeast. The earth has swallowed the boundary, leaving only the memory of a circle drawn against the hillside.
On upper SE-facing slopes of Knockacarrigeen. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (D c. 45m) but no visible surface trace survives. It lay on or immediately outside the line of the enclosing wall of a large hilltop enclosure (GA043-033006-). Another enclosure (GA043-106----) lies 25m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
