Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilvarnet North is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Kilvarnet North, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a low bog-island in pasture and measures thirty-five metres north-south and forty metres east-west. A scarp rising to one point eight metres defines the oval boundary, while an external fosse and terrace mark the southern and south-eastern arcs. Hawthorn bushes now cover part of the interior, which slopes upward toward the bog-island summit.
In pasture, on a low bog-island. An oval area (35m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a scarp (max. H 1.8m). An external fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.4m) is evident along the S arc. There is a terrace (Wth 6m) along the SE arc on the line of the fosse. A road truncates the fosse at NNE. The interior, which is partially overgrown with hawthorn bushes, encompasses the summit of the bog-island and slopes up to it. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
