Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilnaglare Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilnaglare Lower holds a broad earthen ring where human ingenuity and fairy cunning may have collaborated. The wide fosse and raised floor suggest a place designed to keep unwanted visitors out, perhaps including the very creatures whose name it bears. That uncertainty is the point. A fort is not only a wall; it is a boundary drawn around life itself.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 32.8m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
