Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilmurrily

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilmurrily lost its ring fort to the plough, erasing the earth bank that once stood northeast of the church. The fairies kept their fort hidden in local memory even after human tools levelled the site. What remains is a absent shape, an empty circle in the field where the boundary between worlds became indistinguishable from ordinary soil.
This univallate rath was situated NE of Kilmurrily Church (KE003-029----). The site was ploughed, however, and no surface trace can be seen today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 186. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
